Want to identify food sensitivities? Try pulse testing.


Pulse challenge testing.

This is a simple method to detect food sensitivities and intolerances. This test can be more effective than lab tests and can be done at home. Although, if you prefer a lab test for food intolerances you can contact me to find out about them.

Identifying foods that affect you is just the beginning of treatment. If you are suffering from food
sensitivities then you will most likely need to implement a protocol to improve gut and immune health. A practitioner can help you with this.

Back to pulse testing! This test was devised by Dr Arthur Coca, an allergist from the US. The theory is that the sensory information from the taste buds in the mouth informs the central nervous system, if the body is reacting to a substance there will be a brief reaction when the nervous system receives his information; the heart will beat faster. We can record this information by testing the pulse. A rise in pulse rate of more than 6 beats suggests a sensitivity.

Pulse testing individual foods.

1. You should be sitting down and relaxed.
2. Establish your baseline pulse by counting it for a whole minute.
3. Place a sample of food on their tongue, do not swallow. Keep it on the tongue for at least 30 seconds.
4. Ensure the food is in it’s purest form. For example, if you are testing apples then pure apple is better than something containing apple alongside other ingredients.
4. Take the pulse whilst the food is still on the tongue and make a record of this. Don’t swallow the food – spit it out and rinse the mouth out with water. 
5. After two minutes, re-test the pulse to see if it has returned to normal. If not, wait until it does before
  testing the next food.
