Opti-O-3 blood spot fatty acid biomarker test
The Opti-O-3 fatty acid profile test is an easy-to-use finger prick test that you can carry out at home. This test identifies your individual omega-3 requirements based on a thorough fatty acid profile and measurement of key biomarkers:
Omega-3 index: an early cardiovascular risk indicator
Omega-6 to omega-3 ratio: an established marker of long-term health and chronic illness
AA to EPA ratio: the most accurate measure of ’silent’ or chronic inflammation
Taking into account body weight and red blood cell omega-3 levels, the final report recommends the specific dose needed to bring these biomarkers into healthy target ranges. Armed with your Opti-O-3 test results and a personalised dose that is specific to your individual needs, you can be confident that you are taking the right amount of omega-3 fatty acids to maintain good health for the long term.
PLEASE NOTE: your dried blood sample must arrive back at Igennus within 48 hours of taking the test, so if you do not live in mainland UK, we do not recommend purchasing this test unless you use expedited international delivery.
Omega-3 index, biomarkers & long-term health
Higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids are consistently associated with a lower risk for the development of both physical and psychological disorders. The key inflammatory biomarkers we test for are scientifically established markers of long-term health. Working to achieve an omega-3 index of 8% and maintaining an AA to EPA ratio that falls between 1.5 and 3 has been shown to help:
Support immune function
Support cardiovascular health
Support cognitive function
Support healthy mood
Support energy production
Support eye health
How will you benefit from the Opti-O-3 fatty acid profile?
The amount of omega-3 fatty acids required in the diet to combat deficiency or to provide therapeutic support for a clinical condition is difficult to define precisely, because omega-3 requirements are unique to each individual and are influenced by a number of factors, including diet and lifestyle. Whilst supplementing with omega-3 should result in an increase within cell membranes, there is considerable variation in response, with body weight being the strongest influencer.
Dose guidelines on product packaging are generalised and cannot take into account the various influencing factors. Armed with your Opti-O-3 test results and a personalised dose that is specific to your individual needs, you can be confident that you are taking the right amount of omega-3 fatty acids to maintain good health for the long term. To ensure you are taking the correct dose of omega-3 according to your ongoing needs, we recommend taking the test prior to taking high dose omega-3 supplements and again at six months to monitor progress and ensure your health biomarkers are maintained.
What does the test involve?
The test can be completed at home and doesn’t involve a visit to your GP. Using the small single-use lancet (finger pricking device) supplied, a small amount of blood is taken from a finger, dried on a filter paper and then posted to our laboratory.
What if your biomarkers & omega-3 levels are already satisfactory?
In most cases, anyone following a typical Western diet will fall short of achieving an omega-3 index of 8% and an AA to EPA ratio of between 1 and 3. If, however, your results indicate that your fatty acid profile is optimal, you will be advised on any dose required to maintain optimal levels.
